For much of the twentieth century, photographers did not issue limited-edition prints. Editioning became prominent when galleries and collectors began artificially limiting the market to increase the value of their collections.

The bulk of printed objects we see today with labels of inkjet, giclee, archival pigment on Hannemuhle or otherwise are modulated ink sprayed onto the surface of fine papers. However, silver gelatin prints are light itself, captured within the strata of photographic paper.
